#9 Sheldon Adelson-Net Worth $37 Billion $846 M | -2.2% As of 4/11/2014

Sheldon Adelson returns to the top 10 richest in the world for the first time since 2007 after making an average of $32 million a day over the last year, third-most of anyone on the planet. Shares of his Las Vegas Sands, worth more than all other U.S. casino companies combined, continued climbing thanks to booming business in Asia, where he plans to continue expanding. After more than a year of talks and negotiations, Adelson dropped plans to develop a $30 billion megaproject in Madrid's suburbs. Investors didn't blink -- the stock rose more than 3% the next month. Adelson, who spent $100 million trying to get a republican in the White House in 2012, is now using his vast fortune to fight internet gambling in America, pitting himself against some of the biggest names in finance, private equity and gambling. He told Forbes he is willing to "spend whatever it takes" to win.

American casino and hotel magnate Sheldon Gary Adelson, seen here with architect Moshe Safdie, constructed a casino resort in Singapore's Marina Bay. It is billed as the world's most expensive standalone casino property at 6 billion Dollars. With the casino complete, the resort features a 2,561-room hotel, a 1,300,000-square-foot (120,000 m2) convention-exhibition centre, the 800,000-square-foot (74,000 m2) The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands mall, an iconic ArtScience museum, two large theatres, seven "celebrity chef" restaurants, two floating Crystal Pavilions, an ice skating rink, and the world's largest atrium casino with 500 tables and 1,600 slot machines. The complex is topped by a 340m-long SkyPark with a capacity of 3,900 people and a 150m infinity swimming pool, set on top of the world's largest public cantilevered platform, which overhangs the north tower by 67m. The 20-hectare resort was designed by Moshe Safdie Architects. (Photo by Jean-Marie Hosatte/ABACA/Newscom)

US gaming tycoon Sheldon Adelson gestures during a press conference at the Marina Bay Sands complex in Singapore on June 23, 2010. Asians' love of gambling is so strong that the equivalent of five Las Vegases in the region will not be enough to satisfy demand, US gaming tycoon Sheldon Adelson said.
